Damian’s Story
By Ciara, Damian’s Mom
Damian was born on May 14, 2008, full of energy and ready to take on the world. He was my second oldest of five sons—Julian, Damian, Gage, Marquent, and SaVaughn. From the time he could walk, he loved music, sports, and being by my side. He had a kind heart, always looking out for others, standing up against bullies, and sharing his joy with everyone.
He loved fishing with his brother Julian, riding dirt bikes and four-wheelers, and spending time with his friends, who all called me “Ma” because they were always at our house. He was a great big brother, especially to my youngest, and even inspired his best friend to be a better brother. Damian was a leader—he did his own thing and made his own path.
In his early teens, he got caught up in social media conflicts, like many kids do. I warned him to stay away from the drama, but I never imagined it would lead to something tragic. On June 10, 2023, just 27 days after turning 15, Damian asked to go to a graduation party at a local basketball court. Similar events had been safe, so I had no reason to worry.
That night, a group of boys he had argued with online showed up, armed. As the party ended and kids began leaving, shots were fired into the air to scatter the crowd. Damian and his friends ran toward their car, but they were ambushed. Damian and two of his friends were shot. His friends survived, but Damian was critically injured.
I received the call every mother fears. Rushing to the hospital, I prayed harder than I ever had before. When I arrived, Damian tried to get up—he had been waiting for me. I held his hand, reassured him, and walked alongside him as he was airlifted for emergency care. Tragically, his heart stopped on the way, and at 3:34 AM, my world shattered. All I could think about was how I would tell his brothers, my husband and our family.
The boys responsible were known, but no arrests have been made. In the aftermath, my family has faced threats, forcing us to move. My oldest son, consumed by grief, made choices that landed him in jail. The pain is unimaginable, but I fight every day for my other children, for justice, and for Damian’s memory.
One day, I hope to start a nonprofit in his name—to support other grieving mothers and to speak to young people about the reality of gun violence. Life is short. Take pictures, make memories, and cherish the ones you love. People move on, but we never will. We will always celebrate Damian during his birthday and holidays and keep his pictures throughout our house. Forever 15. Long Live Damian.
