Pregnancy, Infant & Child Loss Awareness Month

By Sarah Kariniemi, Brecken’s Mom

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Did you know that in 1988 U.S. President Ronald Reagan declared October as the month to recognize the complicated grief of bereaved parents and show support for those who have suffered such a devastating loss.

This official recognition helps raise awareness for all those who have lost a child to stillbirth, miscarriage, SIDS, or any other cause during pregnancy and infancy. At Just Enduring, we extend that scope to include children of any age by calling October Pregnancy, Infant and Child Loss Awareness Month.

Not only does this month acknowledge and support the thousands of families who have lost a child, but it helps educate the world about pregnancy, infant and child loss. Visit our Resources for Bereaved Parents or Resources for Family and Friends pages to learn about the support resources Just Enduring offers.

Although the entire month of October is used for awareness, October 15th in particular is a special day to participate in the International Wave of Light. Everyone is encouraged to light a candle at 7pm local time to honor all the babies and children who have left us too soon. With everyone lighting their candle at local time we create a “wave of light” around the entire globe.

At Just Enduring, we are here to support all those who have been affected by child loss. Started and founded by bereaved parents ourselves, we are here to raise awareness and provide education for all those going through the unimaginable.

We want all parents to know that they are not alone in this journey, and there are so many other parents who may be in similar situations. We are here to help bereaved parents connect to other bereaved parents to share each other’s story.

Help us now, and always, to honor all the babies amongst the stars.
